Learn how to use Template Tags to label, find, and protect your message templates.

Written by LineLeader Product Team

As your library of message templates grows, it can become harder to find the right one or to remember which templates are tied to which campaigns. Template Tags let you attach short, descriptive labels (like "Summer Camp", "Back to School", or "Spanish") to any email or text template, then quickly filter the Message Templates table down to just the templates you care about.

To keep tag lists tidy across your organization, only corporate users can create, rename, or delete tags. Any user who can edit a template can still apply existing tags to it.

High Level Process Overview

  1. If necessary, enable the Template Tags feature

  2. Create the tags your organization needs

  3. Apply tags to your email and text templates

  4. Use the Tag Search to filter the Message Templates table

The Process in Detail

Please note that some organizations restrict access to the pages or icons specified below. If you do not see the options listed, ask your company's CRM Administrator for help.

1. If necessary, enable the Template Tags feature

A) Click Settings > System > Features

B) Enable the "Template Tags" toggle

Once enabled, you'll see a new Tag(s) column on the Message Templates table, a Tag Search field above the table, and a tag icon on each template's editor page.

2. Create the tags your organization needs

Tag creation is done from the Manage Tags modal, available to corporate users only.

A) Click Automation > Message Templates > [select any template]

B) Click the show/hide toggle in the upper right

C) Click the tag icon next to "Tags"

D) Click Add and type the name of your new tag

(Repeat step D however many times you want)

E) Click Save

Pro Tip: Keep tag names short and consistent. "Summer 2026" is easier to scan in a list than "Summer 2026 marketing campaign emails". You can always rename a tag later, and the change will apply everywhere the tag is used

3. Apply tags to your email and text templates

A) Click Automation > Message Templates and click on the template you want to tag

B) Click the show/hide toggle in the upper right

C) Click the tag icon next to "Tags"

C) Select one or more tags from the list, then save

4. Use the Tag Search to filter the Message Templates table

A) Click Automation > Message Templates

B) In the Tag Search field above the table, select one or more tags

C) The table will narrow to only templates that have all of the selected tags

D) Clear the field (or click the X on a chip) to return to the full list

Pro Tip: Combine Tag Search with the standard search box will limit the templates you see to those with all of the selected tags and have the search keyword as well.

A Note About "Used in Workflows" and "Used in Drips" Tags

"Used in Workflows" is automatically applied to any template that is currently being used in a Workflow Automation.

If you have Drip Campaigns enabled, "Used in Drips" will appear if a template is being used in a Drip Campaign.

These tags cannot be manually added or removed to a template; Enroll applies and removes these tags automatically when they're added or removed from a Workflow Automation or Drip Campaign.
