The Engage mobile app now features an Offline Mode, allowing administrators and staff to remain productive even when their devices lose connectivity.
Enable Offline Mode
This feature must be enabled. To enable it, reach out to our customer service team to request that it be enabled. Tell them you need the "mobile/offlineMode/enabled" customization enabled.
What Offline Mode Does
When Offline Mode is enabled, your mobile device will keep an updated list of people stored in memory who are checked in. It will also check every several seconds to see if the device is online.
When the device discovers it's offline, a banner will appear at the bottom of the screen which says, "No Internet. Tap to switch to Offline Mode."
Using Offline Mode
If you tap the banner, the device will switch to a new "Offline Mode" screen.
(Important: if you are in the middle of unsaved work, you will lose that work if you switch to Offline Mode.)
The Engage app allows users to record seven key Moments, including checking children and workers in and out for the day.
Simply tap the Moment you wish to record. The next screen will let you select the people you wish to apply that Moment to.
If you tap "Check In", the list of people will be limited to those who are not already checked in. Otherwise, the list will be limited to those who are already checked in.
You can tap multiple names, except when checking out. For example, if you tap "Kelly Hartman" and "Justin Morris" they will both move to the top of the screen with a green check mark next to their names:
After selecting the names you want to apply the Moment to, tap "Next". You'll get a screen that allows you to add or edit additional details based on the type of Moment you selected. For example, if you tap "Check In", your screen could look like this:
After tapping "Save", you'll return to the Offline Mode menu.
All the Moments you record will be saved to your device.
Your device will continue checking in the background to see if you have regained access to the Internet. When it detects you're back online, it will show another banner at the bottom of the screen indicating that you are back online and can switch out of Offline Mode whenever you want by tapping the banner.
(Important: if you are in the middle of unsaved work, you will lose that work if you switch out of Offline Mode.)
Tapping the banner will cause all the Moments you recorded and saved to upload and sync with other (online) devices and will return your app to function as normal.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can I send or receive messages while in Offline Mode?
A: Messaging is not available during Offline Mode.
Q: A child in my class was checked in with someone else's device and I don't see them in my list of children I can record Moments for. Should I check them in on my device too?
A: Yes. Checking the child in will allow you to tag them for all the other Moments.
Q: If multiple people are checking in the child, will there be multiple check-ins recorded for that child when everyone syncs?
A: No. When devices sync, if there are multiple check-ins in a row without a check-out, only the first one that was recorded will be made part of the child's record. The same process applies to check-outs, starting Sleep Moments, and ending Sleep Moments.
Q: If I have unsaved work when I switch to Offline Mode, when I leave Offline Mode will I go back to the screen I was on, and will my unsaved work still be there?
A: You will lose unsaved work when switching to Offline Mode and you will be returned to the Dashboard when you leave Offline Mode.
Q: Is there an Offline Mode for parents?
A: Offline Mode is to allow staff and administrators to continue operations when their Internet access is lost. Offline Mode is not available to parents.
